Small Bathroom Shower Design Options

Fitting a small bathroom shower - options

What do you do if you want to add a shower but you have a very small bathroom?

While I do love my bathtub when I get the opportunity to use it for a long and relaxing soak, I wouldn't give up my shower without a fight. I find that showers are quick, refreshing and much more economical than bathing. When I was redesigning my small bathroom I took the opportunity to replace the shower that was installed above the bathtub at that time.

No matter how difficult the problem looks to begin with there is usually a way to solve it if you just take the time to sit down and design your bathroom makeover carefully.

Lets take a look at your options.

Remove the bathtub

Discarding the bathtub should give you more than enough room to fit in a sizeable shower enclosure. The problem is that you won't have a bath anymore. While this might suit your current lifestyle you might want to think about what you might need a few years in the future and when you come to move out and sell your property.

When you sell your property you will want it to have a bathroom with a bathtub even if it has a great shower. Buyers seem to expect to find a bath in the bathroom and the lack of one can seriously affect the selling price of your property.

Have the shower over your bathtub

I'm not keen on this option because I didn't like it when I had one but it's an easy option. If there really is no other way or you want to add a shower without serious remodeling work then it's something that you can consider. You will need to replace your bathtub faucets with a set with an integral showerhead and add a shower curtain or splashguard. It's cheap and easy but only a last resort in my book.

Turn your bathroom into a wet room

This is an ambitious design that will involve turning the floor of your entire bathroom into a giant shower base and drain. It can be a very expensive option to convert a conventional bathroom into wet room but it has the advantage of allowing you to put your small bathroom shower anywhere you like. Even over the toilet if you want to although I wouldn't advise it.

A curved quadrant shower cubicle

If you can redesign your bathroom to allow you to get even the smallest of shower cubicles in then that surely is one of your best options. The shower enclosure can be either free standing or installed along a wall or in a corner.

Even a small shower enclosure is better than no shower enclosure in my opinion so you should check out the available sizes to find the smallest unit that you would be OK with. You can always get a larger size if you manage to find enough free space into your makeover design.

Depending on how small your bathroom is you may need to look at many ways of saving space. There are some very small and narrow toilets available and your washbasin can be tiny if necessary. Use some graph paper to help arrange the new fixtures in the most efficient manner. Cutting out the shapes of your new fixtures and moving them into different arrangements on your graph paper can be fun.

Finally look at curved quadrant shower enclosures as a space saving alternative to square or rectangular ones. Finding one of these was the turning point in my small bathroom shower design. Everything fell into place nicely after that.
