Ballet as a captivating dance form has enthralled discerning audiences for many years. It is a form of dance that combines beauty and grace to tell a story in a dance form. Generally performed in theatres, ballet has always been a favoured dream of many little girls. While ballet dancers need to work very hard for many years to perform in a professional ballet company - this does not deter the aspirants. Since so many French names are given to ballet postures, for instance the plie, most people think that the dance itself began in France. Actually ballet is known to go back as far as 15th century Italy. These movements performed during the Renaissance led to the French development of ballet as we now know it. The Queen's Ballet Company was the very first and was located in France. As the years passed the beautiful dances began to be performed in gorgeous and complicated costumes, and intricate sets and props were introduced. Royalty fell in love with the ballet as it became more popular. The costumes became more elaborate and within a few hundred years dancing on toes began. Since there were no block toe shoes yet, the dancers could only hold a pose for a few seconds at a time. La Sylphide is credited with introducing the romantic style of ballet in the 1800s. This style used the toe dancing technique extensively and brought about many changes to ballet. However, to answer the question posed by many, the traditional tutu came from the ballet Giselle where the tutu was worn by all the ghostly spirits. Romantic ballet featured many women dancers. Some ballerinas came from the United States. Ballet was also embraced in Russia and Denmark, but was actually declining in France. During these years ballet was considered ghostly and mythical, unrelated to natural human movement. As the 20th century advanced, ballet definitely became more representative of how humans actually move. This was due in part to the popularity of other dance forms. These changes continue today, as ballet often includes other dance styles when it's performed. Some ballets today have even gone so far as to combine another style of dance into the ballet. In 1944 a ballet was introduced called Fancy Free that used jazz dance with the ballet steps to create a revolutionary ballet, and it was well received. While traditional classical and romantic ballets are still performed, taught, and enjoyed today, ballet has evolved with the times, and still has a huge following. Ballet is a beautiful expression of what the human body is capable of, and while most of can never dream of performing many of the steps and moves that a ballet dancer can, we still enjoy watching the magic of the ballet.
